The Winter Courtyard: A Season of Light and Lasting Memories

While the gates to the Winter Courtyard closed for the season about a month ago, the warmth and comfort it provided continue to resonate across the Conquest Hospital. This year, the courtyard became more than just a space; it was a sanctuary for reflection, a place for final goodbyes, and a canvas for love.

Thanks to your incredible support, over 120 baubles were placed on our memorial trees this winter. Each one represented a cherished life and a story of a family finding a moment of peace during a difficult time.

The true measure of the courtyard’s success lies in the voices of those who visited. We were deeply moved by the feedback shared by families and staff:

  • Final Goodbyes: One local family, whose mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer just before Christmas, spent her final days at the hospital. They shared that they spent three wonderful days in the courtyard, creating special final memories with friends and family.
  • Healing for Children: A grandmother who visited with her two grandchildren (aged 6 and 8) told us: “Thank you for doing this… they lost their mummy in November and they loved drawing on the baubles for her 💛”
  • A Place of Remembrance: The space provided a vital outlet for grief, including a mother seeking a bauble to honour her two sons lost at the Conquest in 2024 and 2025 and many others who dedicated baubles to friends and family members.
  • Clinical Comfort: Ward Sisters from both sides of the courtyard reported that patients found immense joy and peace simply by having a view of the festive lights and trees from their beds.
  • “How absolutely beautiful and a real asset for everyone 🤗” — Courtyard Visitor

These un-sought reflections from people who visited the Winter Courtyard, shared on Facebook or directly with the team, give just a glimpse of what we hoped the Courtyard would achieve. So, thank you from us for helping us get this project together despite the last-minute change of location. We are especially grateful to Bauvill who sponsored the event making it free to everyone, and the Estates Team, Security, the Cleaners and the Porters who took on additional workload each day to keep the Winter Courtyard open. Please do share this email with your teams with a huge thank you from us on behalf of the many people who visited it.

Looking Ahead

While we had hoped to host a dedicated ‘late night’ opening for our hardworking NHS staff, the early arrival of the flu season meant we had to prioritise hospital safety and cancel the event. We are already planning to schedule this special event earlier next year to ensure our brilliant staff have the opportunity to enjoy the space.

The Winter Courtyard is a testament to what our community can achieve together. Thank you for ensuring that even in the coldest months, the spirit of the Conquest remains bright.
